A BRIEF COMMENTARY ON LIBER LXXVII

By Soror Artemis & Frater Mastema

"Write unto us the ordeals; write unto us the rituals; write unto us the law! But she said: the ordeals I write not: the rituals shall be half known and half concealed: the Law is for all." AL. I: 33-34

Book 77 contains the 'rights of man', as delivered in the 'Book of the Law' to Aleister Crowley. The age of restriction is over for those who live their life as their own.
The Law of the Aeon of Horus has been delivered for the benefit of mankind. Not all men and woman will choose to undergo the ordeal of Initiation. Not all men and woman will choose to under go the rituals and great rites of Magick. However, all men and woman have the right to the freedom of the Law of Light - Life - Love - Liberty.

"the law of the strong; this is our law and the joy of the world." AL. II: 21

law - qualities and virtues of the individual.
strong - strength of spirit and will.
this is our law - belonging to those who have strength and follow their own law.
joy of the world – positive change and growth is invoked by the law of the strong.

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." AL. I: 40

Do what thou wilt – this is a blasphemy against all gods and against all restriction. Every individual must act on those things that forwards their will.
whole of the law – each individual must follow their own will and not be controlled by the will of others.

"thou hast no right but to do thy will. Do that, and no other shall say
nay."
AL. I: 42-3

no right but to do thy will – doing anything other than your own will is a delusion. There are no rewards or punishments in the hereafter, therefore, act only on your own will.
no other shall say nay – no one has the right or obligation to restrict the will of another.

"Every man and every woman is a star." AL. I: 3

is a star – every man and every woman is as unique and individual as each star in the heavens. As each star must follow its’ own orbit, so too must each person follow their own path.

"there is no god but man."

no god but man – each person contains divinity and has the potential to become god.

  1. Man has the right to live by his own law--
to live in the way that he wills to do:
    to work as he will:
    to play as he will:
    to rest as he will:
to die when and how he will.

LIBERTY – movement, expression through action.
Evil – all that hinders the execution of will.

  1. Man has the right to eat what he will:
    to drink what he will:
    to dwell where he will:
to move as he will on the face of the earth.

LIFE – acquisitions, ownership of essential impersonal things.
Evil – all that which is not impersonal and universal.

  1. Man has the right to think what he will:
    to speak what he will:
    to write what he will:
to draw, paint, carve, etch, mould, build, as he will.
    to dress as he will.

LIGHT – inspiration, self-expression, knowledge.
Evil – failure to solve the great equation, then to prefer one expression or phase of the universe to another.

  1. Man has the right to love as he will:
"take your fill and will of love as ye will, when, where, and with whom ye will."
    AL. I: 51

LOVE – union of opposites.
Evil – that which tends to prevent the union of any two things.

  1. Man has the right to kill those who would thwart these rights.
    "the slaves shall serve."
    AL. II: 58

the right to kill – death is a transformation from one state to another (mental, physical, or spiritual).
those who would thwart these rights – therefore one has the right to transform the state of anyone blocking the rights of another.
slaves – anyone not doing his or her own will.
shall serve – anyone or anything controlling their will.

LAW – individual virtues of Light – Life – Love – Liberty.
Evil – all that which hinders the expression of the will.

"Love is the law, love under will." AL. I: 57

Love is the law – union within and without, until no distinction can be made.
love under will – individual action until union.
